ABECAN Conference is a traditional event that occurs in Brazil each two years and it is related to Canadian Studies. In 2009, the 10th ABECAN International Conference will be taking place at the Centro de Cultura e Eventos of the Universidade Federal de Goiás - central area of Brasil, from November 17 to 20, 2009.

This Conference has always tried to gather professors, researchers, graduate students, undergraduate students and professionals from Brazil and other countries. Considering the need of a multidisciplinar escope, in our 10th edition we intend to open up some opportunity for reflections about the new configuration of Canadian Studies in Brazil, in Canada and in the world. Having this idea in mind we decided to organize the 10th ABECAN International Conference based in two broad themes: Diversity and Dialogue within these two countries - Canada e Brasil – and also the Americas. We Thought about diversity because this path implies recognition of multiple perspectives. We thought about dialogue because this seems to be the only path through which one can understand different contexts, landscapes and stories to live by.

We wish the 10th ABECAN International Conference can create place for a better educational, linguistic, political, economic and social understanding about Brazil and Canada. We also hope this conference can offer the ground for knowledge construction connected to several fields related to both countries. As planned, our aim is to open up opportunities for academic and professional debates refering to possible cooperation activities between Brasil and Canadá. We intend to discuss and promote Canadian Studies as carried out in both countries and in the Americas, particularly focusing on the issues concerning to the new programm – Understanding Canada – and on some priorities of our country, Brazil, and the Americas as a whole.

Considering the event’s goals we established the following sub-themes to be discussed during the Conference: a) Comparative Studies on Arts, Language and Literature; b) Canadian Studies and Professional Experiences; c) Health: studies, experiences and results; d) Education and New Thechnologies; e) Diversity, Education and Society; f) Aborigene Issues; g) Energy, Ecology and Enviroment; h) Hope and Peace: Possibilities; i) Human Rights and Democracy.

We wish you all a very nice Conference!
